A significant community effort to promote environmental sustainability took place recently at Barangay Paitan, San Carlos City Pangasinan, organized by PSU San Carlos City Campus under the initiative called BAYANiyugan.
This tree planting and growing activity, led by Dr. Liza L. Quimson, the Campus Executive Director was made possible through a collaborative partnership with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of San Carlos City, headed by Hon. Mayor Julier AYOY Resuello.
The BAYANiyugan project, which focuses on enhancing community engagement in environmental conservation, from the Department of Agriculture, under the initiative of the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) contributing 100 coconut seedlings for the activity. The program, designed to educate participants about the importance of coconut farming and its positive impact on the local ecosystem, marks a significant step in San Carlos City’s commitment to sustainability.
Commencing with the event, Ma’am Geramae Elaine Elguira led a prayer, setting a tone of unity and purpose. Dr. Liza L. Quimson welcomed attendees, highlighting the significance of collective action in promoting environmental stewardship. Mr. Mark Roy Q. Macanlalay, representing Dr. Dexter R. Buted, Philippine Coconut Authority Regional Director III for Region 1, 2, and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), shared a compelling narrative on the historical relevance of coconut seedlings in the region, emphasizing their role in both ecological and economic sustainability.
Dr. Rhenea Lizlie Sanchez-Viray, the project leader, elaborated on the event’s goals, explaining the need for community involvement in nurturing the environment.
Furthermore, Madam Lourdes Pinto, the General Services Office Head, and Architect Alexandre Doria, the Local Youth Development Office Head, conveyed an inspiring message from Mayor Resuello, encouraging participants to embrace the responsibility of protecting and enhancing their local environment.
A covenant signing ceremony followed, symbolizing the commitment of PSU officials, students, and community members to the success of the BAYANiyugan initiative.
This momentous occasion reinforced the collaboration between academic institutions and local government in addressing environmental challenges.
Mr. Nick C. Caiga, PSU SCC Extension Services Coordinator, delivered the closing remarks, expressing gratitude to all participants and acknowledging the hard work that went into making the event a success.
The spectacle was hosted by Mr. Reynald Dimalanta Gloria, the Executive Secreatry to the CED and the PRIO Head.
Special thanks were given to Dr. Elbert Manangan Galas, the current PSU President, for his perduring support, as well as to Dr. Dexter R. Buted, the former PSU President now serving as the PCA National Administrator, for conceptualizing this vital community project that is poised to inspire similar initiatives across the nation.
Through BAYANiyugan, the PSU San Carlos City Campus and the LGU San Carlos City demonstrated a collaborative effort to advocate a greener future, aiming to perdure the community and instill a lifelong commitment to sustainable practices among the youth and residents. The planting of the coconut seedlings signifies hope for a thriving environment, reflecting the shared vision of the community to cultivate both nature and connection.
